You will often see diversity work encapsulated within the terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. At Diversity and Equity Consultants, we will consistently utilize the term RDEI (Race, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). We know from the research that the social construct of race is avoided and is one of the most difficult topics to explore. The aversion and anxiety in discussing topics of race, discrimination, and systems of privilege and racism must be a part of all conversations in order to identify and address some of our most challenging issues. In the words of the late James Baldwin: “Not everything that is faced can be changed…but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
